Thoughts for the afternoon - Challenges of a Flexible Future
All aspects of technology can be important e.g. audio to support people that need enhancement or support for vision and hearing.
Changes to technologies e.g. high definition can supersede existing technologies and enhancements.
Digital platforms for customers using sign language.
Tactile platforms for Braille users.
Inclusive design and innovation.
Perceptions by management that certain approaches are more efficient and attract more students - but there there be adequate resources to support it?
Finding out what other departments/schools are doing; sharing information.
How does information become knowledge and/or wisdom? How do we transmit /impart information/knowledge/wisdom.
When engaging students in learning, are we finding ways to make them aware of the learning experience?
Use of visuals or graphics or anything in conceptual form can help this engagement.
In an introductory IT learning environment, students may be used to using computers but not used to information systems - introduce them to these systems in a structured and scaffolded way. There are different levels of confidence, ranges of language. Build structured activities that are new to everyone - level playing field.
Teaching and research - interest, motivation : using different models, activities, execises to provoke thought and reflection.
Thoughts for the morning - Opportunities of a Flexible Future Attention span and amount of information Determining what information students need Team work enhanved by social networks(web) Grabbing student attention when for most of them internet is FB or youtube etc. (Example from Gordon -switching off student monitors controlled by a switch on lecturer's desk) Learning efficiently or sufficiently? We are teaching the studesnt, we are not teaching the subject, then what is the position of teacher's subject knowledge in this environment? How to wieght between the teaching skills and the subject knowledge? We have to have very good understanding of the technology in order to deliver effectively to the students People/patients in the real world are more and more likely to have technology in their homes. Do we teach students about using this technology for health? Using technology to the detrimant of anything else? Reflective/creative skills are seen to be the ones that may slip with increasing use of technology Are we as teachers expected to be proficient in ALL the technology? and is this realistic? How do we evaluate the learning potential and applicability of learning technolog
