Thoughts for the morning - Opportunities of a Flexible Future
We are talking about the changing student cohort and evolving technologies but what about transforming teaching practice....alot of Diana Laurillard's work has indicated that teachers are using technology in the old transmission mode
How do we ensure that students still develop their social skills while moving forward with technology
Communicating using technologies for social networking is not the same as actual socialising one-on-one or a group of people both formally and informally
Social skills: what are they?
meta-linguistic aspects (non-verbal)
Technology enhanced: No
interaction frequency
Technology enhanced:Yes
listening skills
Technology enhanced: Yes
displaying empathy
Technology enhanced: Yes
building rapport
Technology enhanced: yes/no
self-disclosure
accepting the view of others
social cognition
inter-cultural competence / communication / ability
emotional intelligence (ability to anticipate/ assess/manage/control emotions of self)
Social networking digitally:
losing the art of being able to communicate - what is the point of texting each other being at the same couch
Thoughts for the afternoon - Challenges of a Flexible Future
e-Portfolios student's concerns about, 'can they be exported at the ned of their course?'
it is not important what means (medium) is used but that taping into what motivates and works for students to allow them to learn. Need to explore / survey students what they like to use to learn and socialise with.
teachers need to come up with clear needs and then explore technology that may best suit or drive that need.
need for excellent support and learning for the staff in order to motivate and allow change to occur.
need to utilise internal knowledge of the university, example, tap into the business faculty to teach the staff business approach to development and running of a technological project
providing time and resources for the staff to develop /discuss / source / and learn which technology which might best suit the learning needs of the students.
